Exhibition The Old Fish Market. Past and future
An old market that turns into a research and innovation center.
The old Barcelona Fish Market first opened in 1931. It was the city’s first permanent wholesale fish market. Forty years ago, it closed its doors to move to the new Mercabarna facilities in Zona Franca. For a time, the building served as a municipal depot for vehicles that had been stolen, abandoned or impounded. It was demolished in 1992, due to the construction of the Olympic Village. Since March 1996,the plot has been occupied by an outdoor public car park.
The new Fish Market scientific complex is being built in the same area. Promoted by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (IBE, CSIC-UPF), is focused on research and innovation in biomedicine, biodiversity and the well-being of the planet.
The Fish Market project involves the creation of a new 45,000 2 research and innovation complex that will be located on the land previously occupied by the market, next to the Pompeu Fabra University’s Ciutadella campus.
This scientific hub, which forms part of ‘Ciutadella del Coneixement’, will provide space for 1,200 researchers. It will be fully operational in 2026, and will become an outstanding part of the biomedical hub existing around Barcelona’s seafront.
The exhibition is a result of a collaboration between the UPF and the TMB Foundation and is focused on the project. Admissions are free of charge once you have validated your transport ticket. You can visit it at the Ciutadella - Vila Olímpica station.
