Vehicle history:
In 1899 the first electric trams began to run on the ring-road line, which would later change to number 29. In less than five years all the tram lines were electric and many new ones were built, creating a significant network that was extended to to nearby towns. In a short period of time, trams like N.58 were running everywhere and became the largest tram fleet the city ever had.
They became very popular and were known as cadeners because of the loud noise the brakes made every time they raised or lowered the chain that activated the slider rubbed against the rails. As this brake system required some time to manoeuver, they also had an electric brake to use in emergencies.
This tram series ran on wide tracks, however in 1932 some were adapted to circulate on narrow tracks. Their design was very functional with two doors and two wooden benches. A rope ran across the roof inside the carriage for passengers to request a stop.
As of the 1940s, new tram models were incorporated into the service and many cadeners were refurbished to be reused as trailers. The n.58 tram was one of the first electric trams in Barcelona and was also the last cadener, running from 1899 to 1964.
