Music in the Metro
An innovative project that combines music and technology to bring it closer to the public.
What is Music in the Metro?
Music in the Metro is a pioneering initiative by the TMB Foundation and AMUC BCN that transforms the metro into a vibrant cultural space. The aim of the project is to dignify artists, enrich the travel experience, and create connections between people and music in unique areas of the network. Music in the Metro is part of the TMB Cultura programme and is a global benchmark, inspiring other cities.
In 2025, the project was linked to the winning proposal of the TMBInnova challenge: an interactive sound and visual installation designed to enhance the user’s travel experience through artificial intelligence, located in the interchange area of Passeig de Gràcia station.
In addition, every December we celebrate the Music in the Metro Festival at Universitat station, with multicultural performances that turn the metro into a large urban stage.

Music in the Metro Festival
25 years filling Barcelona with rhythm
The first Music in the Metro Festival was held in 2006. Today, this annual event is one of the most established gatherings in Barcelona’s underground music scene.
The festival, traditionally held at Universitat station, showcases all the groups that perform throughout the year at the designated performance spots in the metro network tunnels, acting as an annual meeting point. The festival’s concert marathons usually begin in the morning and continue until midnight.
The success of this festival is helping position the project as a benchmark within this type of cultural programme internationally, and TMB as a company committed to promoting art and culture.
How does it work?
Artists who wish to join the project must pass an audition to obtain the official accreditation card. AMUC is responsible for organising the musicians’ schedules to ensure both coexistence and quality.
The timetable runs from Monday to Sunday, from 9:00 to 21:00, with 2-hour slots. During the audition, each candidate performs a few pieces chosen at random by the jury members from the 20–30 songs included in the repertoire submitted by each musician.
The jury assesses criteria such as performance quality and repertoire variety, as well as the originality and creative richness of the proposal, and the cultural, stylistic and instrumental diversity. If the jury’s evaluation is positive, the musician obtains the AMUC BCN membership card and can take part in the association’s projects, which grants them the right to perform in the metro as long as they comply with the project’s regulations.
