The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) presents this exhibition, which reflects the comprehensive vision with which it has developed the metropolitan park network. A vision that seeks to combine nature-based solutions with high-quality architecture and landscape projects. This approach connects with the principles of the New European Bauhaus: sustainable, beautiful, and inclusive.
Within the framework of the World Capital of Architecture 2026 and coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the metropolitan administration, the exhibition offers an insight into the transformation of former industrial, agricultural, and natural spaces into new public areas of high environmental and social value for the benefit of citizens.
Through architecture and landscape projects, the exhibition traces more than thirty years of the metropolitan park network’s history and highlights how these spaces have become an essential green infrastructure for the metropolitan territory.
Today, metropolitan parks play a key role in addressing major contemporary environmental challenges, such as climate change adaptation, sustainable water management, and biodiversity preservation. They also help improve environmental comfort in dense urban environments by creating spaces with shade, coolness, and landscape quality, acting as a key element in enhancing citizens’ quality of life. The contents have been developed in collaboration with Arquitectes per l’Arquitectura (AxA).
Structure
The exhibition is structured around three main areas: environmental and ecological values linked to climate adaptation, sustainable water management, and the promotion of biodiversity; architectural and heritage values, focused on heritage revitalization and multifunctional architectural design and social values, related to cohesion, territorial equity, and citizen participation.
Currently, the metropolitan park network consists of 55 parks across 35 municipalities, covering an area of more than 3.1 million square meters. It is a living infrastructure in constant evolution, managed through environmental indicators that make it possible to assess its social and ecological benefits.
With Naturally Metropolitan, the AMB reinforces the role of green spaces as structuring elements of the territory and as a key component in improving citizens’ quality of life.
